![]() In Sellout, seasoned music writer Dan Ozzi chronicles this embattled era in punk. The result was a schism: those who accepted the cash flow of the majors, and those who defiantly clung to their indie cred. But the DIY punk scene, which had long prided itself on its trademark authenticity and anti-establishment ethos, wasn't quite ready to let their homegrown acts go without a fight. Looking to replicate the band's success, major record labels set their sights on the underground, and began courting punk's rising stars. After indie favorite Nirvana catapulted into the mainstream with its unexpected phenomenon, Nevermind, rebellion was suddenly en vogue. ![]() Punk rock found itself at a crossroads in the mid-90's. ![]() ![]() "Ozzi's reporting is strong, balanced and well told.a worthy successor to its obvious inspiration, Michael Azerrad's 2001 examination of the '80s indie underground, 'Our Band Could Be Your Life.'"-New York Times Book ReviewĪ raucous history of punk, emo, and hardcore's growing pains during the commercial boom of the early 90s and mid-aughts, following eleven bands as they "sell out" and find mainstream fame, or break beneath the weight of it all ![]()

The colonists naturally assumed they would “share in the imperial fruits of victory,” but instead, the British authorities aimed to exert greater control over the Colonies, restricting speculation west of the Appalachians by proclamation and extracting much-needed revenue from them to pay for the costly war. Series 2 kicks off at the hazy end of the long hot summer of 1996, just after Rae has finally revealed the truth about her mental health to her gang of friends and shared that moment with object of her lust, Finn. The series is written by Tom Bidwell, a previous alumnus of Channel 4's talent scheme Coming Up, and Oscar-nominee for his short film Wish 143. My Mad Fat Diary is adapted from Rae Earl's real-life diaries and subsequent book My Fat, Mad Teenage Diary. Rae's friendship group on the 'outside' includes best friend and popular girl Chloe, jack-the-lad and joker Chop, the sweet and innocent Izzy, major lust interest Archie, and fit-but-knows-it Finn. Rae has just got out of a psychiatric ward, but she still sees Dr Kester Gill, an unconventional therapist who is trying to help her fully return to 'normal'. Set in the mid-90s at the height of cool Britannia, My Mad Fat Diary takes a funny and honest look at life from the perspective of Rae - a funny, music-mad teenager who, despite an eccentric mother and her own body image and mental health issues, has a huge lust for life, love and trying to get laid. ![]() ![]() This book is my second favorite Judith McNaught book (surpassed only by PERFECT, the second book in this series). ![]() I don’t think I’ve read this book 25 years, but I remember how much I loved these characters and their story. I might enjoy a book for a while, but this book I remember after years. OPINION: This book reminds me of how there are only a few books that really are memorable. Both have moved on in their lives but neither can forget all that was between them when they are face to face. Betrayal, heartbreak, fury, passion still swirl around the couple. Eleven years hasn’t diminished the intense feelings between Matt and Meredith. Meredith is no longer the eighteen year old girl Matt knew and she is on the precipice of finally heading her family’s department store empire. Now eleven years after their brief marriage, Matt and Meredith Bancroft are again in the same place. A self-made man, Matt built his fortune always remembering the rich, spoiled girl he was briefly married to before they were torn apart. ![]() THE STORY: Matthew Farrell is seen as a playboy corporate raider. ![]() “Either give me your hand,” he said, “or end it now, and put us both out of our misery.”įINAL DECISION: Fabulous story with characters that I have remembered for almost three decades with a story that covers over a decade heartbreak, betrayal and transformative love. ![]() ![]() ![]() After all, Phoebe was not the kind of woman men fell in love with-Phoebe with her untidy hair, her rumpled clothes, and her fingers forever ink-stained from the poetry she wrote. It would be nothing short of torture to be married to Granville, knowing he didn't love her and never would. Once she'd noticed, she couldn't seem to stop noticing, and suddenly Phoebe was disastrously in love. Her forced engagement to him should have been quite a cold-blooded arrangement.except that one day Phoebe looked at Granville-really looked at him-and saw what she'd never seen before: he was darkly, breathtakingly attractive. Not that I would want each character in a book to be named something boring and/or traditional like Tom or Mary, but still, the crazy or made-up names should be kept to a minimum.Īnyhow, this was a light, quick read, and suited its purpose well - it was fine as a mindless read for a day at the pool. I inwardly cringed at each new strange name, including Allegra, Brick, Bluto, Hollis, Calgary, Curren, Kenzie, Sterling, Colby, Benton, Barbie, Sabine, Ashland, Schuyler, Sultan, Bridger and Thornton. Maybe the author is trying to be cool by using these trendy (?) names, but it was just annoying to me. I get really annoyed when authors use names that are difficult to spell, pronounce, or remember, as it seems like an unnecessary hardship for readers. ![]() What it did have, which I noticed early on and then became fixated on, was an over-abundance of ridiculously-named characters. The plot was pretty predictable and unimaginative, and it just didn't have that spark that made me want to dig in and devour the story and the characters. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really good, either. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Braedyn knew this fight could be brutal-but how much can one girl be asked to sacrifice in order to save the world?Ĭheck out the previous books in the series: Together they wonder if now is the time to claim their one night together-knowing that one night is all they may ever have.ĭarker forces have their own plans for Braedyn and the Guard.
